about
Mickey de Grand IV is a Cuban-American composer and producer from Miami, FL.
In the late 1990s, he began to play in punk bands and toured the Southeast. He found his lifelong interest in composing and arranging for orchestra in high school, leading him to study Orchestral Composition and Arrangement with a concentration in Schoenberg’s Serial theory of Music and Riemanian Theory of Music at City College of New York. Following his formal training, Mickey founded the label Cosmic Chronic, where he began cutting records under several project names.
Mickey started the band Psychic Mirrors in 2010, ultimately gaining the attention of Peoples Potential Unlimited and Red Bull Music Academy (where Mickey spent October 2014 participating in RBMA Tokyo). Notable releases include I Come For Your Love (2011), Charlene (2013), and LP Nature of Evil (2016). Psychic Mirrors have toured the U.S, Canada and Europe, growing a loyal following with their modern Caribbean sound.
Following the release of Psychic Mirrors’ debut LP, Mickey began producing tracks for artists such as SZA, ABRA and Denzel Curry, serving as Executive producer on Curry’s critically acclaimed TA13OO (2018). He also composes for film and television, with his music appearing on HBO, ESPN, PBS, ViceTV, and others.
Most recently, Mickey has started a new label called Amnisia. Its first project is the second LP from Psychic Mirrors—Ophilia—released on July 2nd, 2021.
lyrics
Sometimes I feel phony,
Staring at you in the park.
Sigh too loud and you turn around,
now I'm just looking at your dog.
Alright, I'm a man, I'm a manatee;
float to you baby all night long.
Give it to you right you give me a reason, know you're my setting sun.
Me and Suzie feeling groovy down in Trinidad, hot as hell and we’re on the run.
She’s a real machine, color TV dream,
glittering and a rolling stone.
Oh baby baby baby let me tongue tie you,
gonna rock and roll for fun.
Let me find you, grind you, always remind you, I’m gonna be your only one.
I wanna tell you the last thing that I thought: I’ve been in love (it’s true) but that was long before
Geraldine
I’m a rock
I’m a Joe (plenty savoir fare)
I’m a star on the silver screen,
From the car I’m the smoke in the midnight air
I’m a hammer
I’m a real marine
See your eyes in the group pic
the jewel of the cruise ship
I’m drawing a line in the sand
See Freddy won’t like it,
at the pool you’re delighted cuz
I’m set upon holding your hand.
On the dock as you pose
there’s rose and you froze
it makes you shuffle down way back when
And with a little bit of nerve I text and observe
you know I'm really much more than a friend
Go on and write all day, what I got to do?
going my own way chasing after you
Only you and I can start to set the score
I’m in love with you but that was long before
CQQL Records is a “sequel” to the timeless production ethos of the 70s, 80s, and 90s disco, boogie, AOR, funk, house, soul,
R&B, and more. We’re fond of analog sounds and gear, releases produced on physical media, and paying homage to djs, collectors, and the musicians themselves
At first glance, the landscape on the cover of Martin John Henry’s The Other Half of Everything is a scene of complete isolation. This is Scotland. An archetypal rugged landscape of hills and lochs, as far as the eye can see. On closer inspection, there are some signs of habitation: buildings, roads, farms… but they … Continue reading Album of the Week: The Other Half of Everything → Bandcamp Album of the Day Nov 21, 2011
